It is commendable how this movie flows and eases into you. Witty scenes with some beautiful acting keep a smile on the face for a subject that is avoided and not talked about in mainstream conversation.
What I liked in the movie
The premise and the treatment of it
The movie's premise is simple and not new for books and movies. It is about infidelity. But the setting it has been put into is refreshing sprinkled with some light-hearted humour. After a decade of being in marriage when husband and wife start liking each other again then there is infidelity on the top of infidelity. You will understand if you watch the movie.
Details and connecting the scenes
How the cinematographer takes time to make sure that the scenes are connected. How a conversation with a boyfriend is turned into an actual activity with the spouse is greatly done. There is a sudden change of scenes where a conversation is happening with boyfriend/girlfriend and then in a moment husband and wife are talking in a house on the same topic but in a different manner. Some of the scenes stick with you like the one eating Chinese on the window of the house or the dance moves on a vintage song in the bar in Ooty.
Music and lyrics
If you have not listened to the music then do listen to it, music is heartwarming. The best part is that there are lyrics that mean something and give soul to the movie. You might be associating some songs with some of the scenes long after you have seen the movie.
Superb character setting and acting
There are 4 superbly crafted characters, the husband and wife who both are independently earning. One has not been able to fulfill her parent's wish of becoming a doctor and did not marry a person decided by her family. On the other hand hero has moved unwillingly to the family business and his days now go into maintaining the business. Then there is one boyfriend who is an established photographer and a girlfriend who is an aspiring actor.
This mishmash of characters is played by some very capable actors. They show maturity in each scene. The movie opens up beautifully and then suddenly becomes somber, and then there is a beautiful conversation in Ooty between husband and wife. There are subtle messages everywhere. It tells how the heroine is looking for his husband in her boyfriend. The husband is wanting the girlfriend because he thinks he is wanted by her which is not the case now with his wife.
Urban take and city relationships
Two working couples in the hustle and bustle of Mumbai are at the center of this movie. It explains that every relationship needs time even if they are husband and wife. Nothing can be taken for granted. But the city demands more from you each day and every day. As is a more frequent case these days, especially in urban centers there are marriages out of love, it might have happened that they are from different castes and also in some cases from different states. All of these urban settings are clubbed into one and begs the question is it the urban setting that is the culprit or it is just that we are evolving and all of this will be behind us? We will learn to give our partners more time and rediscover them just like they do in the movies even if it was unintentional.
People are not villains
Life is not an objective question paper, it is an essay that has its own nuances. And this movie writes an essay, you do not have to hate anyone, it is just human nature, it is how we evolved as humans. The movie just portrays that no one is a villain, everyone has their circumstances. Everyone is not required to like everyone but this does not mean that they are not likeable.
If you watch this movie, you will be left with a happy sensation, maybe a couple of tears in your eyes (at least it did in mine), and it also tells that everybody survives and lives on.
